PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and others agreed to a $2.5 million settlement to end their part of a lawsuit brought over Rhode Islands disastrous $75 million deal with 38 Studios, his failed video game company. If approved by the judge overseeing the lawsuit, the agreement filed Monday with four 38 Studios officials brings an end to Schillings involvement in the case. Schilling has strenuously denied wrongdoing and said the company failed in 2012 in part because the state didnt do enough to help. Neither he nor the other company officials admit liability in the settlement with the Rhode Island Commerce Corp., the states economic development agency.Retired Superior Court Judge Francis Darigan, who was acting as mediator in the case, said during a news conference that none of the defendants would pay out of pocket. Instead, 38 Studios insurance company would pay.No one is going to be perfectly satisfied with this, Darigan said. Its a practical move on the part of the state. The Commerce Corp. signed off on the deal after it determined through an exhaustive study that the combined assets of Schilling and the other three would not exceed $2.5 million, Darigan said. He added that the attorney who did the review was satisfied that there were no hidden assets that could be reached.Schilling has said in the past that he lost as much as $50 million of his own money that he invested in 38 Studios. Darigan said the examination of his finances was confidential, and he himself did not know the details.Schilling was fired by ESPN this year for unacceptable conduct following an insulting post he made on Facebook about transgender people. He recently signed a contract to host an online radio show. Darigan said that contract was part of the information the Commerce Corp.s lawyer had considered when examining assets.Schilling tweeted Monday afternoon that he wanted to tell his side of the story publicly once all is approved, but did not say when that would be.If Superior Court Judge Michael Silverstein approves the settlement, it would bring the amount of settlements in the case so far to about $45 million, and leave one defendant, First Southwest, which acted as Rhode Islands financial adviser in the deal.Lawyers for the Commerce Corp. asked the court to approve the settlement, saying in court documents that its a highly unusual case in which it makes no economic sense whatsoever for the parties to proceed to trial rather than proceed with the proposed settlement.38 Studios agreed to move to Rhode Island from Massachusetts in 2010 in exchange for a $75 million state loan guarantee. It went bankrupt less than two years later.Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo reiterated Monday that she thinks 38 Studios was a bad deal for the states residents. She said shes focused on recovering as much taxpayer money as possible and her team is preparing for trial with the remaining defendant.About $2 million from Mondays settlement will be applied to paying back bonds, according to the Commerce Corp. It said Rhode Island taxpayers would still owe about $28.2 million on the bonds.Rhode Island last month reached its biggest settlement in the case, amounting to $25.6 million from Wells Fargo Securities and Barclays Capital Inc.---Associated Press writer Jennifer McDermott contributed to this report. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- When Indiana tipped off its regular season home opener, it looked like the sixth-ranked Hoosiers returned from Honolulu empty-handed.Just five days removed from defeating then-No. 3 Kansas in the Armed Forces Classic, Indiana started Wednesday nights game flat on offense, slow on defense, and for much of the first 10 minutes, played mediocre basketball. The Hoosiers looked tired, searching for the momentum that carried them past Kansas. When youre coming off a great win like we had, you think the (next) game is going to be easier, but its not, Indiana coach Tom Crean said, adding that it felt like his team hit a wall.James Blackmon Jr. got Indiana (2-0) over that wall. Blackmon Jr. made five 3-pointers, scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 100-78 victory over UMass Lowell. The River Hawks led three times during the first 10 minutes and by as many as five points. But with 8:24 remaining, Indiana found its niche behind the savvy scoring of Blackmon, who had 20 points in the first half.Indiana outscored UMass Lowell (1-2) 32-15 during the final 8 minutes of the first half. The Hoosiers went into halftime having shot 60 percent from the field (21 of 35). Of the 46 rebounds, 19 were on the offensive end, leading to 15 second-chance points.Crean praised his squad for establishing physicality and speed, rather than attempting to establish their jump shots, or an offensive presence. And in doing so, it led to a defensive effort that contributed largely to the turning point of the game. Robert Johnson echoed his coachs sentiments.I think it all starts on defense, Johnson said. Once wwe get stops, defensive rebounds, we can get out in transition and play.ddddddddddddJohnson scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds and had five assists for Indiana. The Hoosiers led by as many as 29 points half way through the second half.Jahad Thomas finished with 16 points and Tyler Livingston had 14 for the River Hawks.Despite the 22-point loss, UMass Lowell coach Pat Duquette found very little to be disappointed about.I dont think we were too affected by the atmosphere. We dont play in arenas like this. We dont play in front of a crowd like this. I was happy that our guys didnt get distracted by that and stuck to the game plan, Duquette said. For us to score 78 points against a really talented Indiana team on their home court, thats a great sign. I think they are a legitimate top five team.BIG PICTURE: Indiana will have three more games to build on the big win over Kansas.
